Hazard Pay for Grocery Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic

There are many heroes without capes that are putting themselves at risk during this COVID-19 pandemic and grocery workers are one of them. My hardworking brother is one of these grocery workers at H-E-B and I have a phenomenal sister at Costco who is doing the same. I am very proud of them for being there for our community in the roughest of times with such a great attitude!

Hazard pay is extra payment for working under dangerous conditions. For example, Warevise pays its employees an extra 30% of their salary from the start of the pandemic. We need to demand hazard pay from our large retail grocers for our grocery workers who are on the front lines of this outbreak. While many of us have the luxury of being able to quarantine and work from home, they do not have that option. Grocery workers are coming into contact with hordes of people every day and putting themselves and their family at high risk to the infectious disease.

I don't claim to understand what our grocery workers are going through, but I have cashiered before and I can only imagine what it is like. My heart goes out to them. It is understandable that our world is in a panic, but this can leave many customers to be angry, irritable, and rude. Needless to say, hours are longer and more stressful than usual. Shelves empty as fast as you can stock them, and people arrive at the store sick - coughing, sniffling, sneezing, and touching. Our grocery workers are there for us with a helpful spirit, yet they are left in a very vulnerable position and it is up to us to implore that they be taken care of monetarily at the very least.
